About

Professor David Hildick-Smith is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at the Sussex Cardiac Centre, a regional specialist unit. He has over 20 years’ experience in treating heart conditions using minimally invasive, catheter-based procedures.

He specialises in a wide range of interventional cardiology treatments, including coronary angioplasty, patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure, atrial septal defect (ASD) closure, left atrial appendage closure, and transcatheter valve procedures, including aortic and mitral valve interventions. 

Professor Hildick-Smith performs more than 300 procedures each year and is experienced in managing complex cardiovascular conditions. He also provides on-site echocardiography where needed to support diagnosis and guide treatment decisions.

Alongside his clinical work, he is actively involved in research and innovation. He is Director of Cardiac Research and has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed publications. He regularly lectures in the UK and internationally on coronary artery disease and structural heart conditions.

He is a recognised leader in his field and currently serves as Structural Heart Lead for the British Cardiovascular Interventions Society. He has also held national and international roles, including serving on the Scientific Committee of the European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions and as Associate Director of the TCT (Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics) conference.
