Dr Björn Björn Birk

Dr Björn Birk is a Consultant in Pain Medicine and Anaesthesia at University Hospitals Sussex, specialising in the assessment and treatment of acute and chronic pain. He provides personalised, patient-centred care using advanced image-guided techniques to optimise outcomes and improve quality of life.

His areas of expertise include back, neck and joint pain, sciatica, neuropathic pain, peripheral neuropathy, and post-herpetic neuralgia (shingles pain). He offers a range of interventional pain treatments, including medial branch blocks (facet joint injections), radiofrequency ablation, nerve root blocks, epidural injections, and peripheral nerve blocks. He also provides innovative treatments for painful diabetic neuropathy and post-herpetic neuralgia, including QUTENZA® high-strength capsaicin patches and botulinum toxin (BOTOX®) injections.

Dr Birk graduated from Nottingham University Medical School in 2013 and completed advanced training in Pain Medicine at St George’s Hospital, London. He was appointed Consultant in Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine at University Hospitals Sussex in 2023.

Alongside his clinical practice, Dr Birk is actively involved in medical education, teaching at Brighton and Sussex Medical School and mentoring postgraduate doctors. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists and a Fellow of the Faculty of Pain Medicine.
