About

Dr Baskar Sekar is a consultant cardiologist with a special interest in complex coronary intervention, including CTOs, heart failure and TAVI. Dr Sekar graduated from one of the top medical schools in southern India.

After moving to the UK, he completed core medical training and obtained a Membership with the Royal college of physicians (MRCP) in 2011. Dr Sekar has done fellowships in top tertiary cardiac surgical centres in the UK with a thorough grounding in cardiology training and developed the skills to manage a wide range of cardiac pathologies. He had undertaken a period of research in one of the five transplant centres in the UK. In addition, to managing patients with advanced heart failure and heart transplant recipients, Dr Sekar has conducted unique basic science research in heart transplant recipients, for which he was awarded a Master's degree from the University of Manchester in 2015.

He joined the renowned cardiology training program in Wales in 2016, working mainly at the two tertiary cardiac surgical centres (University Hospital of Wales & Morriston University hospital, Swansea). During his training, he attained accreditation for echocardiography with the British Society of Echocardiography in 2017. He completed the European Exam in Core Cardiology in 2018. Dr Sekar has a particular interest in medical education and obtained Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education from Cardiff University in 2018 and became a Fellow Higher Education Academy (FHEA) in 2020.

Special interests

Dr Sekar specialises in the investigation and treatment of all aspects of general adult cardiology, including chest pains, shortness of breath, dizziness, blackouts, palpitations, hypertension (high BP), heart valve diseases. 

His main interest is complex coronary intervention, including CTO's, heart failure and TAVI. 


He performs the following procedures with excellent outcomes: 

Right heart catheterisation

coronary physiology assessment

Intra-coronary calcium modification (Rotational atherectomy, Orbital atherectomy, Shockwave Intravascular lithotripsy)

Intracoronary imaging (Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

Other interests involve medical education (training junior doctors and the nursing staff within the department to improve patient care)

Dr Sekar enjoys listening to music and playing cricket and badminton.
