Dr Ashraf Khan

Dr Khan is a highly skilled Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in vitreoretinal disease and surgery, based at the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion in Edinburgh. He offers expert diagnosis and surgical management for a wide range of complex retinal and vitreous conditions.

Dr Khan studied medicine in Edinburgh before completing his initial postgraduate medical training in Yorkshire. He went on to undertake specialist ophthalmology training in the South East of Scotland, with advanced vitreoretinal fellowship training in Edinburgh and at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre, one of the UK’s leading centres for retinal surgery.

He performs all types of vitreoretinal surgery, including treatment for eye floaters (floaterectomy), epiretinal membranes, macular holes, retinal detachments and complications following cataract surgery. His practice covers both emergency and planned retinal surgery, with a strong focus on restoring and preserving vision using modern, evidence‑based surgical techniques.

Alongside his clinical work, Dr Khan plays an active role in ophthalmology education and service development. He is an Educational Supervisor and College Tutor for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, supporting the training and development of junior doctors and future consultants.

Dr Khan also leads the ophthalmic theatre users group across the Lothians, where he is involved in improving and modernising surgical equipment and theatre processes. This work helps ensure patients benefit from up‑to‑date technology, efficient care pathways and high standards of surgical safety.
