He graduated from Guy's and St Thomas' School of Medicine and the University of Cambridge in 1998, completing his postgraduate specialist training in London. He holds full GMC Specialist Register accreditation in Gastroenterology and he is also on the Specialist Register for General Internal Medicine.
Dr Lerman has particular expertise in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and coeliac disease, alongside a comprehensive interest in the full breadth of gastrointestinal medicine.
Dr Lerman understands that patients present with a wide variety of symptoms — some pointing clearly towards a specific diagnosis, others far less so.
Informed by years of accumulated clinical experience, he uses a careful history and practised examination to lead to appropriate investigations to form the foundation for diagnosis.
To deliver the best possible outcomes, he works closely with surgeons, physiologists, dietitians and specialist nurses, taking a holistic approach.
Dr Lerman finds the greatest satisfaction in making the right diagnosis and then working alongside patients to navigate their condition and optimise their outcome.
Widely regarded as approachable and thorough, Dr Lerman is committed to medical education at both postgraduate and undergraduate levels. He is an examiner at UCL Medical School and serves as a Chair and International Examiner for the Royal College of Physicians' postgraduate examinations, while also actively training the next generation of gastroenterologists.
