About

Consultant Gastroenterologist and Liver Specialist

Dr Austin has been a Consultant Physician since 2004, with many years of experience caring for people with digestive and liver conditions. He studied medicine at the University of Birmingham, qualifying as a doctor in 1992, and later completed specialist training in gastroenterology and liver disease (hepatology) in the Trent region and at the Liver Transplant Unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.

Dr Austin was awarded a PhD in 2004 from the University of Nottingham for his research into how gut bacteria interact with the body in gastrointestinal diseases.

Since joining Derby Hospitals, Dr Austin has played a key role in developing high‑quality services for patients with liver disease, including outreach clinics for viral hepatitis. He has been Lead Clinician since 2004 and continues in this role following the merger with Queen’s Hospital Burton.

Dr Austin is actively involved in research and is leading one of ten national centres for a major UK study into liver disease.

Areas of Expertise

Dr Austin treats a wide range of digestive conditions, with a particular focus on:

  • Liver disease, including non‑alcoholic fatty liver disease
  • Liver stiffness testing (elastography)
  • Diseases of the bile ducts and pancreas
  • Investigation of indigestion (dyspepsia) and abdominal pain, including pain after gallbladder surgery

He offers advanced diagnostic and treatment procedures, including:

  • Gastroscopy
  • Flexible sigmoidoscopy
  • Endoscopic ultrasound
  • ERCP (used to treat bile duct and pancreatic problems)
  • Therapeutic procedures such as oesophageal and duodenal stenting

Please note: Dr Austin no longer performs colonoscopy.
