About

I am a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist based in Derby. I specialise in conditions affecting the digestive system and liver. I provide private care at Nuffield Health Derby Hospital and also work in the NHS at Royal Derby Hospital.

I am dual‑registered as a specialist in both gastroenterology and hepatology. This means I have advanced training in treating complex liver conditions as well as digestive disorders.

I qualified in medicine from the University of Nottingham in 1997. I then completed specialist training in gastroenterology and hepatology across the Trent region.

I also completed advanced training in liver disease at the Liver Transplant Unit at St James’s Hospital in Leeds. This helped me develop specialist skills in managing complex liver conditions.

I was appointed as a Consultant at Royal Derby Hospital in 2009.

Alongside my clinical work, I am involved in teaching and research. I have been an Honorary Assistant Professor at the University of Nottingham School of Medicine since 2014. I have published research on a range of conditions, including:

  • Coeliac disease (a reaction to gluten)
  • Hepatitis C (a viral liver infection)
  • Non‑alcoholic fatty liver disease (fat build‑up in the liver)
  • Primary biliary cholangitis (a long‑term liver condition affecting bile ducts)

I also helped lead the Derby liver team to achieve IQILS accreditation. This is a national quality award from the Royal College of Physicians for high standards in liver care.

Areas of expertise

I diagnose and treat a wide range of digestive and liver conditions, including:

  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis
  • Coeliac disease
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Long‑term digestive symptoms, such as abdominal pain or changes in bowel habits
  • Liver disease, including complex and advanced conditions

Specialist procedures

I am highly experienced in endoscopy procedures. These are tests that examine the digestive system, including:

  • Colonoscopy (a test to examine the bowel)
  • Gastroscopy (a test to examine the stomach and food pipe)
  • Flexible sigmoidoscopy (a test to examine the lower bowel)
  • ERCP (a specialised procedure to treat problems in the bile ducts)

I also carry out FibroScan assessments. This is a non‑invasive scan that measures liver stiffness and helps assess liver health.

My aim is to provide clear advice and expert care. I will work with you to understand your condition and help you feel informed and supported throughout your treatment.

Outside of work, I enjoy staying active. I am a keen sportsman and enjoy cycling and swimming.
