About
Dr Aashish Vyas is a highly respected Consultant Respiratory Physician with more than 20 years’ specialist experience in asthma, breathlessness, and complex respiratory disease. Since 2003, he has served as a senior NHS chest consultant at the forefront of respiratory care in the North West of England, leading services that manage some of the UK’s most complex and advanced respiratory conditions.
Dr Vyas is the Clinical Lead for two major NHS England tertiary services: the Severe Asthma and Complex Breathlessness Service for Lancashire and South Cumbria, and the Long-Term Home Mechanical Ventilation and Complex Wean Centre, which supports patients with high-level respiratory needs from across the region and beyond.
National leadership
Dr Vyas is widely recognised within UK respiratory medicine and contributes to national strategy, research, and service development. His senior roles include:
- Lead North West Consultant – UK Severe Asthma Registry
- Executive Council Member – British Thoracic Society (BTS)
- Member, Research and Scientific Committee – British Thoracic Society
These appointments reflect his influence in shaping national guidelines, clinical governance, and the future direction of respiratory care in the UK.

The Elite Breathlessness Clinic
Dr Vyas leads a specialised Elite Breathlessness Clinic designed for:
- Professional athletes
- Recreational athletes (“weekend warriors”)
- Individuals whose breathlessness does not match their level of fitness
This service investigates the underlying causes of unexplained exertional breathlessness, including dysfunctional breathing, asthma variants, airway obstruction, and cardiopulmonary limitations, enabling patients to return to peak performance—whether competing professionally or aiming to complete a comfortable 5K run.
Sports and Exercise Medicine expertise
As Head of Respiratory Services at the Manchester Institute of Health and Performance (MIHP), Dr Vyas provides respiratory expertise within some of the UK’s highest-performance sporting environments.
He works closely with:
- Premier League and Championship football clubs
- Lancashire and Yorkshire cricket teams
- British Athletics
- Aquatics GB and Paralympic athletes
His work focuses on athlete respiratory screening, optimisation of lung performance, early detection of respiratory issues, and the management of complex breathing problems in elite sport.
