The Healthier Nation Index

Our annual barometer which delves into all aspects of the nation’s health.

What is the Healthier Nation Index?

The Healthier Nation Index is one of the most detailed reviews and barometers of all aspects of our health. Last year’s Healthier Nation Index revealed the long-term impact of the pandemic on our physical and mental health.

Now in its third year, it reveals the serious impact the cost-of-living crisis is having on the country’s wellbeing and highlights the link between people’s financial means and their physical and mental health, as well as the importance of taking a holistic approach to the nation’s wellbeing.

This year, the Index also identified;

  • How our sleeping and eating habits are changing
  • Our understanding of the intrinsic link between physical and mental health
  • The barriers women face when it comes to managing their health and wellbeing
  • The role each of us plays in improving our health, including government, business, charities, communities, families and individuals.

We need you to #Find5

In 2022, our Index showed that the average Brit was completing just 40 minutes of vigorous activity per week – 35 minutes less than the NHS recommendation.

To increase this number, we launched our #Find5 campaign, encouraging the nation to find 5 additional minutes each day to focus on their physical health, bringing us closer to that recommended target.

This year, we’re taking this even further by calling on the nation to spread the word and encouraging everyone to #Find5 extra minutes per day to focus on their physical and/or mental wellbeing.

A small change can help create a big impact, why not try:

Spending five minutes less on your phone before bed

Getting off the bus one stop early to get an extra five minutes of exercise

Swapping five items in your shopping basket for a healthier alternative

How is the data collated?

The research is carried out by polling company Censuswide on behalf of Nuffield Health. Censuswide surveyed 8,001 adults in the UK and asked 30 questions.

Answers are split by:

  • Region
  • Age
  • Gender
  • Ethnicity
  • Household income and more
