About

Professor Christopher Hawkes, is a highly distinguished Consultant Neurologist with more than six decades of clinical experience. He practises at Nuffield Health Brentwood Hospital, where he provides expert assessment and treatment for the full spectrum of neurological disorders. His clinical interests include Parkinson’s disease, tremor, headache, dizziness, numbness and tingling, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, smell and taste disorders, muscle and nerve disease, blackouts, memory problems, and stroke.

Professor Hawkes graduated in Medicine from the University of Edinburgh in 1964, and has been a Consultant Neurologist since 1976. His long and respected career includes consultant posts at Queen’s Hospital, Romford, and from 2008 at Barts Health NHS Trust. He also served as an Honorary Consultant Neurologist for 25 years at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, one of the UK’s leading neuroscience centres.

He is internationally recognised for his academic contributions. Professor Hawkes has published over 150 scientific papers and authored two books on disorders of smell and taste. He is the founder and joint Chief Editor of the international journal Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders, first published by Elsevier in 2011. His research spans multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and olfaction, and he remains an influential figure in advancing neurological understanding in these fields.

Professor Hawkes is a member of numerous professional organisations, including the Association of British Neurologists, the British Medical Association, the American Academy of Neurology, the International Movement Disorder Society, the European Neurological Society, and the European Chemosensory Research Organisation. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine.
