About

Simon Butler-Manuel is a senior Consultant Gynaecologist and Gynaecological Oncology Surgeon. He is acknowledged as one of the country’s leading minimal access gynaecological surgeons and a pioneer of robotic surgery in the UK and Europe. He has been a Consultant based in Guildford for over 20 years.

Simon helped to introduce the first da Vinci robot to the Royal Surrey in 2009 through the work of the charity GRACE, which he founded in 2005. Guildford has been recognised as an Epicentre for gynaecological robotic surgical training since 2013. Simon lectures widely and has taught many of the leading gynaecological robotic surgeons in Britain, Europe and Asia. Simon is the current Vice-President (President-elect) of BIARGS, the British and Irish Association of `robotic Gynaecological Surgeons, of which he was a founder member. Simon has been very involved in post-graduate education and surgical training through his involvement with BIARGS, the RCOG and BGCS.

Simon’s private practice mainly consists of patients with complex benign gynaecological conditions such as uterine fibroids, adenomyosis, endometriosis, and those who have had previous surgery. Robotic surgery for myomectomy or hysterectomy is possible in the vast majority of cases, even for those with large fibroids. Simon regularly sees patients as a second opinion.

Simon’s current principal research projects are investigating the use of robotic surgery for women with suspected ovarian cancer: both for those with complex ovarian cysts where the diagnosis has not yet been established, and secondly for women with advanced-stage cancer who are on chemotherapy who need ‘debulking’, or cytoreductive surgery. He has also published widely in the fields of robotics, minimal access surgery, and gynaecological oncology, including laboratory-based research into cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, including tumour bio-markers, and chemotherapy-resistance in ovarian cancer. He continues to collaborate on numerous clinico-pathological translational research projects.

Mr Butler-Manuel only sees adults.
