About
Mr Sean Symons is a highly experienced Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising exclusively in knee surgery for both adults and children. He has been a Consultant since 2008 and combines extensive NHS leadership experience with a busy specialist private practice.
Mr Symons treats a wide range of knee conditions, from sports injuries and traumatic ligament damage to cartilage injuries, meniscal tears, patellofemoral instability and knee arthritis. His expertise includes anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, complex multi-ligament knee reconstruction, meniscal preservation and repair, cartilage regeneration procedures and realignment osteotomies.
Mr Symons has a particular interest in joint-preserving surgery and is one of the UK's leading surgeons in the use of stem-cell based cartilage regeneration techniques. He has performed more of these procedures within the NHS than any other surgeon in England, helping patients return to activity, while aiming to delay or avoid the need for joint replacement surgery.
Mr Symons is also recognised for his expertise in paediatric and adolescent knee surgery. He manages conditions unique to growing children and young athletes, including ligament injuries, patellar instability, meniscal pathology and osteochondral lesions.
After qualifying from The Royal London Medical School in 1994, Mr Symons completed specialist orthopaedic training and a number of prestigious fellowships in both knee surgery and paediatric orthopaedics, including advanced training in Melbourne, Australia. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and was appointed as a Consultant in 2008.
Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Symons serves as Clinical Director for Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, one of the largest orthopaedic services in England. In this role he has led major service developments, including the creation of regional clinical networks and the establishment of nationally accredited elective orthopaedic services.
Mr Symons is committed to providing personalised, evidence-based care, ensuring that every patient receives an individual treatment plan tailored to their lifestyle, goals and expectations. His focus is always on helping patients regain confidence, mobility and quality of life through the most appropriate treatment, whether surgical or non-surgical.
Mr Symons consults privately at Nuffield Health Brentwood Hospital and offers face-to-face, telephone and video consultations.
