Mr Sean Ramcharan is a Consultant Colorectal, General and Robotic Surgeon based at Nuffield Health Warwickshire Hospital in Leamington Spa, providing specialist care for patients across Warwickshire, the West Midlands and surrounding areas, including Warwick, Stratford-upon-Avon, Kenilworth, Coventry and Rugby.

With more than 20 years of clinical experience, Mr Ramcharan offers expert assessment, diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of colorectal and general surgical conditions. Patients commonly see him for hernias, gallstones, bowel symptoms, rectal bleeding, haemorrhoids, diverticular disease, inflammatory bowel disease and bowel cancer concerns.

Mr Ramcharan is the Lead for Colorectal and Robotic Surgery at South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust, where he plays a key role in developing advanced colorectal, laparoscopic and robotic surgical services. He also trains doctors and consultant surgeons in minimally invasive surgical techniques, reflecting his recognised expertise in keyhole and advanced surgical practice.

He has particular expertise in minimally invasive, keyhole and robotic surgery. These techniques can offer important benefits for suitable patients, including smaller incisions, reduced post-operative discomfort, less scarring and a faster return to normal activities. Mr Ramcharan has performed more than 2,000 laparoscopic operations, including over 800 laparoscopic hernia repairs, giving him extensive experience in the surgical treatment of abdominal wall hernias and other common general surgical conditions.

Academic, research, and training background

Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Ramcharan has a strong academic and research background. He graduated from the University of Birmingham and was awarded an MD, Doctor of Medicine, for his research into colorectal cancer.

He has published academic work in colorectal cancer and contributed to specialist education in areas including early rectal cancer, advanced imaging and multidisciplinary cancer care. He has authored open-access academic chapters and has served as a Guest Editor for medical journal publications relating to minimally invasive and keyhole surgery.

Mr Ramcharan has also undertaken advanced surgical training in Holland, France, Strasbourg and Denmark, gaining further expertise in complex colorectal, transanal and minimally invasive surgical techniques.

Research

Mr Sean Ramcharan was awarded a MD from the University of Birmingham for his thesis on the role of stem cell progenitors in the vascular biology of colorectal cancer and on the survival of patients after surgery. 
Sean has an active role in surgical research, is published in highly reputable peer-reviewed medical journals, and is invited to present his expertise in surgical care at international and national meetings. He is involved in research activities with the Universities of Birmingham and Warwick, and has won highly competitive research grants to pursue innovations in improving cancer care and treatment. He also reviews articles submitted by his peers for publication in international journals in surgery and oncology.
