About

Mr Lahiri is a Consultant General & HPB Surgeon at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, one of the largest tertiary HPB units in the UK. He specialises in open, laparoscopic and robotic gastrointestinal surgery with a particular interest & expertise in benign and malignant conditions of the pancreas, liver, gallbladder and bile ducts.

Raj qualified from St. George’s in 2007 and following core surgical training in Cambridge & Norwich, he undertook a period of research at Queen Mary University of London investigating innate immune pathways following major HPB surgery, which lead to the award of a doctorate of medicine (MD) thesis.

Raj completed his higher surgical training in the Kent, Surrey & Sussex deanery including specialist HPB training at the Royal Surrey. Raj consolidated his specialist training with liver transplantation at the Royal Free and a year of HPB and trauma surgery at the Alfred in Melbourne.

Raj regularly performs ‘salvage’ gallbladder surgery on patients that have been turned down for surgery elsewhere. He draws referrals from around the south east of England for this work.

He has a high volume practice in complex liver and pancreas cancer surgery and also regularly performs day case general surgery including hernia surgery and excision of skin lesions.

Research

I previously researched ‘innate immune pathways’ in patients undergoing major HPB resection which culminated in my doctoral thesis from Queen Mary, University of London. This work led to multiple publications in prestigious surgical journals.

I am involved in the implementation of the HPB robotic surgery service at the Royal Surrey. This will facilitate more patients undergoing minimally invasive cancer surgery.

I am committed to quality improvement, most recently in initiating a pathway to standardise investigations for patients awaiting acute pancreatic surgery.

I regularly review scientific manuscripts for multiple surgical journals including HPB, the largest specialist HPB journal in the world.
