About
Mr Raj Lahiri is a Consultant General and HPB Surgeon at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, home to one of the largest tertiary hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) units in the UK.
He specialises in advanced minimally invasive techniques, including robotic gastrointestinal surgery, alongside open and laparoscopic procedures.
He has a particular specialist interest in cholecystectomy (gallbladder surgery) and regularly performs a wide variety of cases, from routine gallbladder surgery to complex 'salvage' procedures for patients who have previously been turned down for surgery elsewhere.
He receives referrals from across the South East for the management of complex gallbladder and biliary disease.

- Advanced robotic and laparoscopic surgery: Performs minimally invasive gastrointestinal, liver and pancreatic procedures using advanced robotic surgical platforms.
- Cholecystectomy: Extensive experience in routine and complex gallbladder surgery, including management of difficult gallbladder and bile duct conditions.
- HPB oncology: Specialises in surgical treatment of benign and malignant diseases affecting the pancreas, liver, gallbladder and biliary system.
- General and day-case surgery: Regularly performs hernia repair and skin lesion excision alongside his specialist HPB practice.
Education
Mr Lahiri qualified from St George's, University of London in 2007. Following core surgical training in Cambridge and Norwich, he undertook research at Queen Mary University of London investigating innate immune pathways following major abdominal surgery. This work led to the award of a Doctorate of Medicine (MD).
He completed higher surgical training within the Kent, Surrey & Sussex Deanery, including specialist HPB training at the Royal Surrey.
He subsequently undertook liver transplantation training at the Royal Free Hospital in London and completed a fellowship in HPB and trauma surgery at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.

Research
Mr Lahiri previously researched ‘innate immune pathways’ in patients undergoing major HPB resection, which culminated in his doctoral thesis from Queen Mary, University of London. This work led to multiple publications in prestigious surgical journals.
He is involved in the implementation of the HPB robotic surgery service at the Royal Surrey. This will facilitate more patients undergoing minimally invasive cancer surgery.
He is committed to quality improvement, most recently in initiating a pathway to standardise investigations for patients awaiting acute pancreatic surgery.
He regularly reviews scientific manuscripts for multiple surgical journals including HPB, the largest specialist HPB journal in the world.
