About
Mr Piero Nastro is a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon with extensive experience in minimally invasive, laparoscopic and robotic surgery. He specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal and general surgical conditions, with particular expertise in colorectal cancer, complex colorectal disease, abdominal wall and groin hernias, complex pelvic endometriosis requiring bowel resection and advanced proctology.
Mr Nastro qualified in Medicine at the University of Naples Federico II, Italy, in 1999. He subsequently completed a Fellowship in Colorectal Surgery at the University of Hull, UK, before undertaking higher surgical training in General and Colorectal Surgery in London (London Deanery). Following completion of his specialist training, he undertook a post-training Fellowship in Colorectal Surgery at St Mark’s Hospital, London, one of the UK's leading centres for colorectal disease.
In 2015, Mr Nastro was appointed Consultant Surgeon at Darent Valley Hospital and Queen Mary Hospital. He is currently the Robotic Clinical Coordinator at Darent Valley Hospital, where he is involved in the development of the robotic surgical programme and the introduction of robotic surgery across a range of colorectal and general surgical procedures.
He is also a Surgical College Tutor for the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Undergraduate Surgical Lead for King's College London and Kent and Medway Medical School. He is a Member and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and an active member of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland (ACPGBI) and the European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP). He is the former ACPGBI Representative of the South East Chapter (September 2020 to August 2026).
Mr Nastro is committed to providing personalised care and discussing the most appropriate treatment options with each patient. Where appropriate, he favours minimally invasive approaches, including robotic and laparoscopic surgery, with the aim of achieving effective treatment while facilitating recovery and a return to normal activities.

Special interests
Mr Nastro has a particular interest in robotic colorectal surgery and robotic hernia repair.
As Robotic Clinical Coordinator at Darent Valley Hospital, he routinely performs and develops robotic surgery for colorectal resections, including colectomy and anterior resection for colorectal cancer, as well as surgery for other complex colorectal conditions such as full-thickness rectal prolapse, transanal excision of rectal lesions by TAMIS and complex pelvic endometriosis requiring bowel resection.
He also has extensive expertise in robotic repair of groin hernias, including abdominal wall hernia surgery and parastomal hernia repair.

Mr Nastro has experience using robotic, laparoscopic and open techniques and will recommend the approach most appropriate to the individual patient and their condition.

Mr Nastro has a specialist interest in advanced proctology, particularly minimally invasive treatment of anorectal conditions.
He treats haemorrhoids, anal fissures, fistula-in-ano, pilonidal disease and perianal lesions, offering a range of established and innovative minimally invasive techniques, including:

His general surgical practice includes robotic, laparoscopic and open surgery for hernias, appendicectomy, soft tissue lumps and other common general surgical conditions.
Personal interests
Outside of medicine, Mr Nastro enjoys spending time with his family, travelling and discovering different cultures. He has a particular interest in sailing, cooking and food, and enjoys keeping active and spending time outdoors.
He also has a strong interest in technology and innovation, particularly the way new technologies can improve surgical care and enhance the experience and outcomes of patients.

Mr Nastro has an active interest in clinical research, particularly in colorectal cancer, minimally invasive surgery, robotic surgery and proctology.
His academic interests include prognostic factors in colorectal cancer, the development and evaluation of minimally invasive surgical techniques, and innovative treatments for colorectal and anorectal conditions.
He has published and presented research in general and colorectal surgery and has contributed to national and international scientific meetings and publications.
His previous academic work has included research into prognostic factors in colorectal cancer, sentinel lymph-node assessment, prevention of postoperative adhesions and the use of intraoperative ultrasound in colorectal cancer staging.
He is committed to education and training and is actively involved in the teaching and development of the next generation of surgeons.
