About
Mr Peter Chong is an experienced Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, specialising in general and colorectal surgery, and in surgical oncology. His interests include colorectal cancer, sarcoma and neuroendocrine tumours, and he investigates and treats benign and malignant soft tissue conditions, including lipomas and sarcomas.
You do not need to know which procedure you need before booking. Mr Chong can assess your symptoms, discuss possible causes and recommend appropriate investigation or treatment, including surgery, further tests or monitoring.
Mr Chong can help with:
Blood in your stool or rectal bleeding - Possible causes include haemorrhoids, fissures, polyps and conditions affecting the bowel. Mr Chong can assess the cause and arrange a colonoscopy or other investigation where appropriate.
A change in bowel habit - Assessment may be appropriate for persistent constipation or diarrhoea, or a recent change in stool frequency, appearance or your usual bowel pattern.
Pain, bleeding or a lump around the anus - Painful bowel movements, bleeding, itching, swelling or a persistent lump may result from haemorrhoids, an anal fissure or a fistula. Mr Chong can diagnose the cause and discuss treatment.
A positive bowel cancer screening test - Mr Chong can provide prompt specialist assessment and, where appropriate, a colonoscopy following an abnormal or positive result.
A bowel polyp or abnormality requiring further assessment - Mr Chong performs colonoscopy and, where appropriate, advanced endoscopic removal of large colonic polyps.
Abdominal pain or suspected gallstones - Mr Chong can assess pain linked to gallstones or other gastrointestinal problems and advise on further investigation such as an upper GI endoscopy or gallbladder surgery.
A lump or swelling - Mr Chong specialises in soft tissue tumours and can assess a new lump or swelling in the abdomen or under the skin, such as a lipoma, sebaceous cyst or other soft tissue mass or a painful, infected toenail. He can arrange investigations and discuss removal if needed.
A hernia - Mr Chong can assess a painful or uncomfortable lump or bulge in the groin, abdomen or around a previous operation site and discuss treatment options.

• Colonoscopy and bowel polyp removal
• Gastroscopy
• Treatment for haemorrhoids, anal fissures and fistulas, including flexible sigmoidoscopy and rectal examination under anaesthetic
• Laparoscopic gallbladder removal
• Open inguinal and other types of hernia repair such as umbilical and epigastric hernias
• Assessment and removal of skin and soft tissue lumps, including lipomas, sebaceous cysts

Research
Mr Chong trained in Glasgow and Edinburgh and received a prestigious travelling fellowship to the Memorial Sloane-Kettering Cancer Centre in New York. He has published research extensively on colorectal cancer and sarcomas, as well as on gallbladder surgery, haemorrhoids, anal fissures and hernia surgery.
