About

Oliver Blocker is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon and was appointed to a substantive NHS post in 2020.

Mr Blocker specialises in knee and hip replacements.  His NHS practice is in North Wales, following specialist training in Wales and at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, Oswestry.  His fellowship experience included the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre in Exeter, Southmead Major Trauma Centre in Bristol and the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham.

In addition to first time total and partial knee replacements he offers regenerative therapies for patients with knee arthritis.  He also performs hip replacements and his subspeciality interest is in revision knee and hip replacements. He is passionate about NHS research and education in Trauma and orthopaedics.  He is an honorary clinical senior lecturer at Bangor University.

Approach to patient care

Mr Blockers approach to patient care is to follow the results in arthroplasty that are associated with success and apply these to all patients.  He likes to find out what patients want to do after having joint replacement and get them back to that, whether it is walking without pain or getting up a mountain.  I aim for patients to have joint replacements that are ‘forgotten’.

Personal interests

Hybrid racing, yoga, surfing, hiking and cycling with his family. Mr Blocker considers himself an extremely active person and knows the importance of a healthy active lifestyle. He wants to get his patients back to the activities that give them their quality of life.

Mr Blocker is the principal investigator for the HiPPY trial (multicentre randomised control trial finding out which type of fixation is best for younger patients having a hip replacement?) in Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and is also the principle investigator for Trauma and Emergency Care trials at Ysbyty Gwynedd.  His ORCID ID is 0000-0001-7953-1450.  He is an honorary senior clinical lecturer at Bangor University.  Two recent papers are below, full list on Pubmed:
