About

Mr Nick Smith is an experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and specialist knee surgeon specialising in advanced knee surgery and sports injuries, based at Nuffield Health Warwickshire Hospital. With an international reputation for excellence, Mr Smith provides expert care for patients seeking a knee specialist in Leamington Spa, Warwick, Stratford-upon-Avon, and across the wider West Midlands. His practice is dedicated to the full spectrum of knee health, ranging from biological joint reconstruction and cartilage repair to state-of-the-art robotic-arm assisted knee replacements using Mako SmartRobotics™. By combining clinical expertise with the latest surgical technology, he ensures a more precise fit and improved soft tissue balancing, leading to faster recovery times and superior clinical outcomes for those suffering from knee pain or limited mobility.

Recognised as a leading UK expert, Mr Nick Smith holds one of the highest-volume practices for meniscal transplantation and complex meniscal repair surgery, including specialised meniscal root repairs. His clinical interests extend to ACL reconstruction (Anterior Cruciate Ligament), multi-ligament knee surgery, and the treatment of patellofemoral instability (kneecap dislocation). Whether treating professional athletes with acute sports-related knee injuries or managing degenerative conditions like knee osteoarthritis, Mr Smith offers a tailored approach that includes partial knee replacement, total knee replacement, and knee osteotomy to preserve the natural joint whenever possible.

Mr Smith’s surgical practice is underpinned by a distinguished academic background and a commitment to orthopaedic research. He completed prestigious fellowships in Bristol and Exeter, as well as a travelling fellowship to the USA to study sub-specialist surgical techniques. As an award-winning surgeon and recipient of the Robert Jones Medal, he holds a PhD in meniscal transplantation and has published over 40 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and review articles on knee surgery.

Currently at the forefront of surgical innovation, Mr Smith leads major international clinical trials, including a global study on meniscal allograft transplantation. He was recently awarded a £1.9 million grant to lead STRAP ACL, the UK’s largest randomised controlled trial comparing standard ACL reconstruction to reconstruction with a tape augment (the "seat-belt" technique). This dedication to evidence-based medicine ensures that every patient at Nuffield Health Warwickshire Hospital receives the most advanced, scientifically-backed treatment available for their specific knee condition.

Research

Having completed a PhD in meniscal transplantation, Mr Smith has continued to publish high-level research papers in knee surgery. He is a co-applicant on a £1.3 million worldwide trial on meniscal transplantation, which aims to provide definitive evidence on the subject.

He has authored a series of publications on allografts in knee surgery, demonstrating that osteochondral allografts are both clinically and cost-effective. Furthermore, his research on allograft use in ACL reconstruction provides the current gold-standard evidence used by surgeons to counsel patients on the associated benefits and risks.

Mr Smith is at the forefront of research into ACL reconstruction stability and biomechanics. His recent work investigates the posterior tibial slope and its critical influence on graft failure risk - research that has been presented extensively at international forums. He is also conducting advanced biomechanical studies to further quantify how tibial slope morphology impacts knee kinematics.

In addition to his biomechanical work, he is a principal investigator in a worldwide trial comparing quadriceps tendon to patellar tendon grafts for ACL reconstruction. His other recent publications cover a broad spectrum of knee pathology, including multi-ligament surgery and clinical outcomes following partial knee replacement.
