About

Mr Mohammad Amer is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in the full spectrum of hip disease, from young adult hip preservation to primary and complex revision hip replacement. He is a substantive consultant at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust, where he also sits on the regional team managing complex pelvic and acetabular trauma and revision hip arthroplasty. In his practice, Mr Amer offers muscle-sparing approaches to total hip replacement, hip arthroscopy, periacetabular osteotomy, Gluteal and hamstring tendon repair/ reconstruction, treating conditions as hip arthritis, dysplasia, femoro-acetabular impingement (FAI) and labral tears. He trained extensively across leading UK units, with fellowships in hip arthroplasty, hip preservation, pelvic and acetabular trauma and revision hip surgery at Southampton, Cambridge, and Northumbria. He holds an MD and MSc in Orthopaedic Surgery from Cairo University and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Trauma & Orthopaedics). He publishes and presents widely at meetings including the British Hip Society, ISHA, SICOT and the AAOS, and serves as his Trust's Arthroplasty and Pelvis and Acetabulum Education Lead and metal on metal lead.

Research

Mr Amer research focuses on improving outcomes for patients with hip conditions, from hip dysplasia in young adults to complex hip replacement surgery. He has a special interest in the SPAIRE technique, a muscle-sparing approach to hip replacement that avoids cutting key muscles, aiming to speed recovery and reduce complications. His work also explores periacetabular osteotomy (PAO), a joint-preserving surgery for younger patients with hip dysplasia, and the safest ways to treat fractures around hip replacements and complex hip and pelvic injuries. His findings have been presented at major conferences including the British Hip Society and the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy.
