About
Mr Buchanan is a Consultant ENT / Head & Neck surgeon, with an interest in voice, swallowing, throat disorders, and neck lumps. He has been an NHS ENT Consultant since 2015. He graduated from Edinburgh University Medical School, having been awarded a First Class BSc (Hons) in Anatomy. He completed a PhD at the University of Birmingham in gene therapy in thyroid cancer, before undergoing Specialist Registrar training in ENT at hospitals in East Anglia, including Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, and Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, Norwich. He then undertook a year-long advanced Fellowship in Head & Neck cancer surgery at Westmead Hospital, Sydney, Australia, learning laser resection for early laryngeal cancers, and surgery for oral cavity cancers. He sees patients with throat disorders and neck lumps, as well as those with general ENT problems.
Mr Buchanan is lead of the Managing Clinical Network for the North Glasgow Head & Neck cancer multidisciplinary team. He co-chairs the intercollegiate MRCS (ENT) examination, held three times per year for national and international trainee surgeons, at each of the four Royal Colleges of Surgeons. He helps co-ordinate the running of the annual Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh Head & Neck dissection course, as well as dissection courses at the University of Glasgow. He is site lead for the University of Glasgow medical students rotating through ENT at Glasgow Royal Infirmary.
Outside of work, Mr Buchanan is a Director of the charitable Buchanan Society. He enjoys skiing, climbing Munros and golf, sings in a choir, and plays the piano, holding the DipABRSM in piano performance.
