Having completed his primary and secondary education in Coventry, Mr Mangat subsequently graduated from medical school at the University of Birmingham. An early interest in orthopaedic surgery led him to complete a BSc in Anatomy at University College London. Mr Mangat joined the prestigious Birmingham Orthopaedic Training Programme which was followed by specialist upper limb fellowships at the internationally renowned Pulvertaft Centre (hand and wrist surgery) and the Liverpool Upper Limb Unit (shoulder and elbow surgery, under the direct guidance of Professor Peter Brownson, the then President of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society).
