Mr Hicks trained at the Royal London Hospital before completing his basic surgical training in Chichester. He went on to undertake specialist surgical training in urology in the Wessex region. This included working in the specialist urology cancer centres of Portsmouth Hospitals, Southampton University and Bournemouth Hospital.
He completed a laparoscopic prostatectomy fellowship with Professor Stolzenburg at the University Hospital of Leipzig, Germany. This gave him unrivalled experience in this world renowned centre of excellence.
Currently Mr Hicks is the clinical lead for the urology multidisciplinary team (MDT) at St Richard’s Hospital. He is also clinical lead for governance and clinical lead for urological laparoscopic surgery and erectile dysfunction.

- James is an honorary consultant in the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford where he performs specialist robotic prostate surgery for West Sussex patients with prostate cancer.

James lives In Chichester with his wife Victoria, also a surgeon in St Richard's Hospital and has three children. He is often found coaching the Chichester Rugby Club under 10's team on Sunday mornings or cycling on the South Downs.

Mr Hicks undertook 2 years of molecular biology research in angiogenesis in urological cancers at Portsmouth University.
During his time as a specialist trainee in the UK and Germany he published many articles on the techniques, outcomes and training in Laparascopic Surgery, specifically Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy for Prostate Cancer.
