Mr Ian Kennedy

Mr Ian W Kennedy is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon whose practice is dedicated exclusively to primary and revision hip replacement surgery. He is Specialty Lead for Hip Surgery at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow and practices privately at Nuffield Health Hospital Glasgow.

His clinical practice focuses on the assessment and treatment of patients with hip arthritis, including those considering their first hip replacement, as well as patients experiencing problems with a previous hip replacement. His expertise encompasses straightforward and complex primary hip replacement, revision hip replacement, infection, implant loosening, and other causes of painful or failing hip replacements.

Mr Kennedy has particular expertise in complex hip reconstruction and revision surgery and is regularly invited to speak and share his experience at major national and international orthopaedic meetings, including the British Orthopaedic Association and the British Hip Society.

He is committed to delivering highly personalised, patient-centred care. He places particular emphasis on clear communication, taking time to understand each patient’s symptoms, concerns and individual goals, and helping them make informed decisions about treatment. His aim is to restore mobility, confidence and allow patients to return to the activities that matter most to them.

Mr Kennedy offers modern techniques in hip replacement surgery. His expertise is underpinned by advanced international Fellowship training in primary and complex revision hip surgery at the world-renowned Vancouver General Hospital in Canada, where he trained under the President of the Hip Society, and at the Endo-Klinik in Hamburg, Germany, one of Europe’s foremost centres for complex joint replacement and revision surgery.

Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Kennedy is actively involved in orthopaedic research, international education and the development of surgical standards. He graduated with first-class honours in Biomedical Science, achieved a final-year distinction in Medicine, and holds an MD for research into pioneering stem-cell therapies for bone repair.

He is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Glasgow and has published extensively in the field of hip replacement and revision surgery. He is the Hip Specialty Editor of The Bone & Joint Journal, one of the world’s leading orthopaedic publications, and was Educational Chair of the Bone and Joint Infection Society.

His contribution to orthopaedic surgery has been recognised through honours and awards from the British Orthopaedic Association, the British Hip Society, the Charnley Trust and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Outside of his clinical and academic commitments, Mr Kennedy enjoys spending time with his family, particularly cycling, playing football and golf with his son and supporting his rugby training.
