About
Mr Cheruvu is a Consultant Laparoscopic and Upper Gastro-Intestinal Surgeon at the Nuffield Health North Staffordshire Hospital.
Qualifying in Medicine in 1984, part of his higher surgical training was at The St George's University Hospital. Mr Cheruvu is a Consultant Laparoscopic and Upper Gastro-Intestinal Surgeon at the Nuffield Health North Staffordshire Hospital since 2004.
After qualifying in Medicine, his initial higher surgical training was at the St George's University Hospital in London and later completed his training at St Jame's University Hospital in Leeds in 2002. He did a fellowship in Bariatric (Obesity) and advanced laparoscopic surgery in Liverpool. In 2003.
As part of Royal College of Surgeons scholarship, he did further surgical fellowships in Japan at the National Cancer Centre and a bariatric Fellowship at Royal Alfred Hospital in Melbourne Australia, before settling in at the University Hospital in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire in 2003.
He has been performing laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery since early 1990s, gallbladder surgery, hernia, anti-reflux surgery and bariatric surgery since 2003. In total he's carried out more than 5000 laparoscopic operations for a variety of indications. He has a wide range of experience in procedures like laparoscopic inguinal hernia and abdominal wall hernias.
He has made over 200 presentations at professional surgical meetings, with over 100 publications in peer reviewed journals on laparoscopic and bariatric surgery. He has been an author of three chapters in surgical textbooks, in laparoscopic and obesity surgery.
Mr Cheruvu has given over 40 invited lectures at various National & International Scientific meetings in the last 2 decades. He is a recognised trainer of laparoscopic and bariatric surgery.
He has demonstrated his laparoscopic operative techniques through live televised operations at national and IFSO international meetings.
Mr Cheruvu has an extremely busy practice at The University Hospital North Staffordshire Stoke on Trent, where he has been instrumental in developing and introducing a complex variety of advanced laparoscopic procedures and bariatric (obesity) surgery, and later at Nuffield Health North Staffordshire.

provides many complex laparoscopic procedures since 2003, such as:

- Laparoscopic revision bariatric surgery
- 2025 – LIRA (Laparoscopic intraperitoneal retro-rectus aponeuroplasty) procedure for large incisional hernias
- Upper GI diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.
Special interests
Mr Cheruvu practices both open and laparoscopic operations. In the last 25 years, the majority of his operations have been performed by laparoscopic techniques.
- Gall bladder – gall stones, polyps, inflammation and non-functioning gall bladder
- Hernia – all forms of hernias including inguinal (groin), femoral, spigelian, lumbar, port site and para-umbilical
- Abdominal wall hernia – primary and complex, recurrent, incisional hernia surgery with mesh repair
- Benign oesophageal disorders – reflux disease, simple and complex giant hiatus hernia repairs, achalasia surgery – hellers cardio-myotomy
- Sub-cutaneous lumps – lipoma, sebaceous cysts
- General surgeical conditions – appendicectomy, abscess, pilonidal sinus excision
- Obesity surgery – for over 20 years he has been actively involved in weight loss assessment and surgical management. The surgical procedures of interest include gastric balloon placement and removal, laparoscopic gastric banding, removal of gastric bands, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, laparoscopic roux-en-Y gastric bypass, mini-gastric bypass, revision bariatric surgery from gastric banding or sleeve gastrectomy to gastric bypass
- Endoscopy – he has a special interest in diagnostic and therapeutic upper GI Endoscopy.
