About
Mr Benjamin Cosway is a Consultant Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Surgeon who treats adults with a wide range of ENT problems.
He has more than ten years of specialist surgical experience and provides evidence‑based care in a clear, structured and patient‑focused way.
He is nationally recognised for his work in voice care, serving as the Laryngology Representative for the British Association for Performing Arts Medicine (BAPAM) and as a Council Member of the British Laryngology Association (BLA).

Clinical expertise
He is the only surgeon in the North East with dual specialist expertise in laryngology and head, neck and thyroid surgery.
He treats common conditions affecting the ears, nose, sinuses and throat, and has specialist expertise in laryngology, which includes voice, airway and swallowing disorders.
He also carries out advanced head and neck surgery and thyroid surgery. He is experienced in both complex specialist cases and in assessing and managing general ENT issues.
Leadership
Mr Cosway holds national leadership roles in head and neck surgery. He co‑authored the latest UK Head & Neck Cancer Guidelines and leads the national advanced training programme for surgeons who specialise in head and neck surgery.
As the North East Regional Representative for ENT UK, he helps to maintain high clinical standards across the country.

- General ENT: Expert assessment and treatment of common ear, nose and throat conditions in adults and young people aged 16 and over, including hearing loss, tinnitus, earwax (microsuction), nasal symptoms and tonsillitis
- Voice disorders (laryngology): Assessment and management of hoarseness, vocal cord nodules, polyps and other vocal fold conditions
- Swallowing and throat symptoms: Assessment and management of swallowing difficulties, globus sensation, persistent throat symptoms and cricopharyngeal dysfunction
- Head and neck surgery: Assessment and surgical management of neck lumps and salivary gland disorders
- Thyroid surgery: Assessment and surgical management of thyroid lumps, nodules and compression symptoms
- Airway management: Diagnostic and therapeutic intervention for airway and breathing problems.
Personal interests
Outside of his clinical practice, Mr Cosway enjoys travelling and hiking with his wife and two children. He is also a passionate musician and performs regularly as a member of Newcastle’s Voice of the Town Choir, with extensive experience including national stadium tours and performances across the UK, such as appearances at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium, Birmingham Arena, and the London Palladium.
This experience as a performing singer gives him practical, first‑hand insight into the physical and professional demands placed on the voice, which informs his work with touring vocalists, theatre performers, broadcasters, and others seeking expert assessment for voice or throat concerns.

This includes research focused on improving outcomes after treatment for head and neck cancer, with an emphasis on preserving function, reducing treatment burden, and enhancing long-term quality of life.
He has also contributed to clinical studies evaluating targeted approaches for persistent throat symptoms, helping to improve care for patients seeking clarity and direction.
