Miss Gilvarry qualified initially in Ireland where she did two years in general medicine and obtained her membership in the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland. She then moved to London to train in ophthalmology- initially in Western Ophthalmic Hospital followed by seven years in Moorfields Eye Hospital London.
She was appointed as a consultant ophthalmic surgeon at the Royal Surrey County Hospital. During this time, she has helped build up the eye department from two consultants to six, incorporating all subspecialties in eyes. She was also involved in the amalgamation of the eye unit with St Peters for on-call purposes. She is and has been for many years, the clinical lead in the department. In the past, she was the surgical care group chairman.
She takes an active interest in teaching and has spent time during her career as a college tutor and regional advisor for ophthalmology.
