About

Dr Shaikh is a Cardiology Consultant with over 18 years experience in the NHS. She has trained in Nottingham, Cardiff, London and Liverpool and this broad experience has provided an excellent grounding in all aspects of cardiology. Her specialty interest is cardiac imaging, specifically advanced echocardiography and cardiac MRI.

Dr Shaikh investigates and treats a broad range of cardiac issues including chest pain, palpitations, hypertension, heart failure and heart valve disease.

She can perform and interpret all initial cardiac investigations including echocardiography (ultrasound scanning of the heart). She can arrange advanced cardiac imaging with CT or MRI if necessary. She can also arrange for any invasive testing if required.

She knows how unsettling cardiac symptoms can be and strives to get to the root cause of the issues whilst being as reassuring as possible.

Additionally, she is passionate about cardiac disease prevention. She believes we all have the power to feel better and live healthier, happier lives through simple, achievable lifestyle changes. Her PhD involved studying sleep and therefore this is a key focus. If requested, all patients can receive a complementary lifestyle plan to optimise all cardiac risk factors.

Research

In 2008 Dr Shaikh successfully obtained a grant from the British Heart Foundation that enabled her to study the role of intracardiac shunting of blood in obstructive sleep apnoea and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. She was subsequently awarded a PhD from Imperial College London in 2012. Her PhD sparked an interest in the relationship of sleep with cardiac health. She continues to lecture to patient groups and health professionals on this topic.
