Dr Tony Lopez trained in London, graduating from St Thomas’s Hospital (University of London) with a BSc in Biochemistry in 1985 and qualifying in medicine (MB BS) in 1988. He completed postgraduate training at Northwick Park, Hammersmith, Royal Brompton, Royal Marsden, and other leading hospitals, earning his MRCP in 1991.
He began his radiology career as a Registrar at Hammersmith Hospital in 1991, later joining the St George’s Hospital rotation as a Senior Registrar and gaining his FRCR in 1994. His training included time at The National Hospital for Nervous Diseases, Great Ormond Street, and Royal Marsden Hospitals.
Dr Lopez has received multiple awards for his work in interventional radiology, including the Nycomed Interventional Scholarship, Cook Interventional Fellowship, and the Reginald G Reid/Graham-Hodgson Scholarship for Endoscopic Ultrasound. In 1996, he won the Stanley Melville Memorial Award from the British Institute of Radiology, which enabled further study at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, focusing on gastrointestinal endoscopic and cancer imaging.
Appointed Consultant Radiologist at Royal Surrey County Hospital and St Luke’s Cancer Centre in 1996, Dr Lopez has led in both general and interventional radiology, serving as lead radiologist (2002–2006) and lead interventional radiologist (2008–2020). His subspecialty interests include invasive coronary angiography and gastrointestinal endoscopic intervention.
He has authored and presented pioneering research on minimally invasive cancer diagnostics and treatment, including one of the world’s largest series on transjugular pelvic vein embolization for pelvic venous congestion syndrome. He is a regular invited speaker at national and international conferences.
Dr Lopez contributed the original chapter on Radiological Intervention in Oncology to the Anglo-American textbook Imaging in Oncology, now in its third edition.
Alongside his NHS role, he is the founder and Director of The Imaging Clinic and Incorporated Health.
