About
Dr Mumtaz Hayat is a Consultant Gastroenterologist with specialist expertise in Gastroenterology, Endoscopy and General Medicine.
He is an accredited colonoscopist for the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme and is the Trust’s Lead Colonoscopist for the programme.
His clinical interests include advanced and therapeutic endoscopy, such as colonoscopy, endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), colorectal stenting, endoscopic full‑thickness resection (eFTRD) of colonic polyps and early colorectal cancer, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and the management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
Dr Hayat qualified in Medicine from Punjab University, Pakistan, in 1988. After completing early training in General Medicine and Gastroenterology, he moved to the UK, where he finished his specialist registrar training in the Yorkshire region.
He has a strong and ongoing interest in research, particularly in inflammatory bowel disease, Helicobacter pylori and lymphocytic gastritis. He spent more than two years in full‑time research at Leeds General Infirmary, studying venous thrombotic risk factors in these conditions and carrying out work in push enteroscopy.
Dr Hayat is a member of the British Society of Gastroenterology and the British Medical Association.
