About
Dr Mumtaz Hayat is a Consultant Gastroenterologist specialising in Gastroenterology, Endoscopy, and General Medicine.
He is an accredited colonoscopist for the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme and serves as the Trust’s Lead Colonoscopist for the programme.
His clinical interests focus on advanced and therapeutic endoscopy, including colonoscopy, endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), colorectal stenting, endoscopic full‑thickness resection (eFTRD) of colonic polyps and early colorectal cancer, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and the management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
Dr Hayat qualified in Medicine from Punjab University, Pakistan, in 1988. Following early training in General Medicine and Gastroenterology, he relocated to the UK, where he completed his specialist registrar training in the Yorkshire region.
He has a strong and ongoing research interest, particularly in inflammatory bowel disease, Helicobacter pylori, and lymphocytic gastritis. He spent over two years undertaking full‑time research at Leeds General Infirmary, investigating venous thrombotic risk factors in these conditions, as well as push enteroscopy.
Dr Hayat is a member of the British Society of Gastroenterology and the British Medical Association.
