About
Dr Jonathan Dakin is a Consultant Respiratory Physician at Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust in Guildford and sees private patients at Nuffield Health Guildford Hospital. He has more than 14 years of experience as a Consultant and specialises in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of respiratory and sleep related conditions.
Dr Dakin trained in Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine in London and completed a research fellowship at the Royal Brompton Hospital, where he was awarded an MD doctoral degree through the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College London. He is also accredited by the European Sleep Research Society as a Somnologist, reflecting his expertise in Sleep Medicine.
He provides specialist care for patients with asthma, COPD, persistent cough, respiratory infections, tuberculosis, lung cancer, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary fibrosis and other complex respiratory conditions. A significant part of his practice focuses on the investigation, diagnosis and treatment of breathlessness and chronic cough, as well as the management of asthma and sleep disorders.
Throughout his career, Dr Dakin has developed and led a number of specialist respiratory services, including home ventilatory support, pulmonary infection and sleep medicine clinics. He established a comprehensive sleep service in Portsmouth, managing conditions such as sleep apnoea, narcolepsy, parasomnias and other sleep disorders. He also developed a home ventilation service supporting patients requiring overnight ventilatory assistance, including those with complex respiratory needs.
Dr Dakin has extensive experience in the investigation and management of interstitial lung disease and pulmonary fibrosis, including conditions such as sarcoidosis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, hypersensitivity pneumonitis and occupational lung diseases. He also has a specialist interest in lung cancer screening and is a member of the lung cancer multidisciplinary team at Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust.
Alongside his clinical practice, Dr Dakin has
contributed to respiratory research and education and co-authored the textbook Making Sense of Lung
Function,
which focuses on the assessment and investigation of breathlessness. He is
committed to delivering evidence based, patient centred care through thorough
clinical assessment, accurate diagnosis and personalised treatment plans.
