About
Dr Johnson Samuel (MBBS, MD, MRCP, FRCP, FHEA) is an experienced Consultant in General (Internal) and Respiratory Medicine who practises at Nuffield Health Brentwood Hospital. He has been practising since 1989 and provides specialist assessment and treatment for a wide range of respiratory and general medical conditions. His clinical interests include asthma, COPD, chronic cough, sleep‑disordered breathing, respiratory allergy, evaluation of breathlessness, and lung cancer.
Dr Samuel graduated with an MBBS and MD in General Medicine from the Christian Medical College & Hospital, Vellore, India, before undertaking higher specialist training in Respiratory Medicine in Wales. He became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians in 1998 and was elected Fellow in 2008. He later obtained a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education (UCL/RCP) in 2009 and has been a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy since 2010.
Since 2004, Dr Samuel has served as a Consultant Respiratory Physician at Basildon University Hospital, part of the Mid & South Essex NHS Foundation Trust. He is also the Trust’s Director of Medical Education and Lead for Pulmonary Physiology & Sleep Medicine, roles that reflect his strong commitment to clinical leadership and training.
His specialist expertise includes sleep medicine, non‑invasive ventilation, and pulmonary physiology. He developed the regionally utilised Cardio‑Pulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET) service, supporting physicians, surgeons and anaesthetists in complex diagnostic and perioperative decision‑making. He regularly manages patients with unexplained breathlessness, chronic cough, COPD, asthma, respiratory infections, interstitial lung disease, and lung cancer.
Dr Samuel is widely involved in medical education. As Director of Medical Education, he oversees postgraduate training across the Trust and teaches medical students, junior doctors, GPs, nurses and allied health professionals. He has organised numerous courses and symposia in pulmonary, sleep, and exercise physiology, and serves as an examiner for the Royal College of Physicians. He has presented at national and international conferences, published in peer‑reviewed journals, and contributed chapters to a respiratory medicine textbook.
He is a member of several professional bodies, including the British Thoracic Society, Royal College of Physicians, British Medical Association, and Medical Defence Union. At Nuffield Health Brentwood Hospital, he also offers allergy testing and provides comprehensive respiratory and general medical care.
Outside medicine, Dr Samuel’s interests include cricket and teaching, reflecting his enthusiasm for both sport and education.
