About
Dr Joao Martins is a Consultant Cardiologist with extensive experience. He has subspecialist expertise in interventional and structural cardiology, including advanced percutaneous valve repair and transcatheter coronary interventions.
He provides comprehensive, evidence-based care across all areas of general cardiology. This includes chest pain, breathlessness, arrhythmias, heart failure, and cardiovascular risk management. He focuses on complex valvular and coronary disease, treating them with minimally invasive, state-of-the-art techniques.
His specialist expertise includes transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). He also offers mitral and tricuspid edge-to-edge repair (TEER), patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure, and complex coronary intervention for angina and myocardial infarction.
Dr Martins graduated with honours in Medicine from the University of Porto, and completed doctoral research at Harvard Medical School and Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Boston, USA. He then undertook postgraduate training in medicine and cardiology in London, followed by advanced fellowships at four major UK hospitals: Royal Brompton Hospital, King’s College Hospital, St George’s Hospital, and Oxford University Hospitals.
He currently practises as a Consultant Cardiologist in structural and coronary intervention at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. He is based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

Research
Dr Martins has a strong academic and research background, underpinned by doctoral research at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he completed a PhD focused on translational stem-cell therapy for cardiac repair.
His early research explored the mechanisms of myocardial regeneration and repair following ischaemic injury, bridging fundamental science with potential clinical application.
Building on this foundation, Dr Martins’ current research is clinically oriented and patient-centred, encompassing device-based therapies and participation in contemporary clinical trials. He has authored multiple publications in high-impact peer-reviewed journals and has presented his work at leading international scientific conferences.
His research focuses on improving outcomes for patients with advanced coronary and structural heart disease through the development, evaluation, and optimisation of minimally invasive, catheter-based interventions.
