Having qualified as MBChB at Glasgow University, Dr Naismith pursued diverse post graduate training in infectious diseases, renal transplant medicine, A&E and care of the elderly before entering a general medical training rotation. He completed the West of Scotland Specialist registrar training programme and was awarded CCT in General internal medicine and Gastroenterology in 2010.
Since then he has held his post as Consultant Gastroenterologist at Paisley RAH hospital in greater Glasgow and Clyde health Board. He has been Lead Clinician for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases for Clyde sector since 2010 and Lead for Clyde Gastroenterology since 2022.
He has developed a research interest in IBD – publishing on Faecal calprotectin and, more recently, on service development with numerous articles in peer reviewed journals. He also collaborated with the Scottish government as part of a longstanding cross party working group on IBD. He was awarded the William Cullen award from Edinburgh Royal College in 2017 for service provision.
