About
Dr Neal has been a Consultant Gastroenterologist since 2004. After graduating from the University of Southampton where he was awarded the Altounyan prize for best undergraduate research, he undertook his specialist training in Ipswich, Norwich and Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.
He has acquired considerable experience in treating people with a wide variety of gastroenterological and liver problems.
He undertakes diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy, colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and inserts PEG tubes for feeding.
He is the clinical lead for nutrition in Eastbourne. His clinical interests include inflammatory bowel disease, dyspepsia, gastro-oesophageal reflux, irritable bowel syndrome, clinical nutrition and diseases of the liver and pancreas.
During his clinical career Dr Neal has undertaken over 10,000 endoscopic procedures and is a highly experienced Endoscopist, undertaking endoscopic procedures regularly every week. As well as undertaking outpatient clinics and endoscopy at the Nuffield Hospital in Brighton he sees outpatients in Eastbourne as well.
Dr Neal is a member of the Regional Training Committee for specialist registrars in gastroenterology across Kent, Surrey and Sussex.
Special interests
Dyspepsia, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, liver disease, clinical nutrition, upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy.
Personal interests
Dr Neal lives in East Sussex with two teenage children. He has a keen armchair interest in most sports, especially rugby and F1. He enjoys active participation in tennis and cycling. Dr Neal has a varied taste in music and prefer vinyl over digital.

As part of his postgraduate Doctor of Medicine degree, Dr Neal had had several research papers published on liver transplantation. His latest publication in 2019 was on the usefulness of biopsies in eosinophilic oesophagitis.
