Professor David Bloomfield

Professor David Bloomfield is a highly experienced Consultant Clinical Oncologist specialising in the management of breast cancer.

His clinical approach has been strongly influenced by a Clinical Research Fellowship in Canada, where he studied clinical epidemiology at the University of Toronto, focusing on treatment effectiveness and the development of clinical research trials.

Professor Bloomfield completed his specialist training at University College Hospital London and The Royal Marsden, and was appointed as a Consultant Clinical Oncologist in Sussex in 1998. In 2001, he established the Sussex Cancer Research Network and has since held several senior leadership roles, including Head of Department for Oncology and Principal Lead Clinician for Cancer in Sussex. He is currently the Joint Breast Cancer Lead for the Surrey & Sussex Cancer Alliance.

An active clinical trialist, Professor Bloomfield has contributed to numerous national clinical trial publications and has recently secured funding for a feasibility study of a shared, compassion-focused communication tool for use by both staff and patients at the Sussex Cancer Centre.

He has a longstanding commitment to medical education. In 2006, he co-founded the MSc in Oncology at the Institute of Cancer Research as Joint Course Director. The programme has grown significantly and now trains approximately half of the UK’s oncology specialists. He has also been instrumental in introducing oncology early in the curriculum at Brighton & Sussex Medical School.

Professor Bloomfield has held multiple roles within the Royal College of Radiologists (Clinical Oncology Faculty), including positions on the Specialist Training Advisory Committee, Council, and as National Medical Director for Professional Practice in Clinical Oncology.

Outside of medicine, his interests include ecology, mountain activities (winter and summer), and equines.
