Dr Stanton qualified in 1998 from Glasgow and completed early training and research there before registrar training in Oxford. His first Consultant appointment was at the Great Western Hospital, Swindon from 2010 to early 2019 where he led for asthma, and bronchoscopy and established the pleural service.
Dr Stanton moved to the North East in January 2019 with an appointment at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle-upon-Tyne where he leads the pleural service and contributes to the severe asthma and lung cancer services while retaining a strong interest in general respiratory medicine.
He has been a member of the BTS Pleural Specialist Advisory Group and helped deliver the recent BTS training standards in thoracic ultrasound. More recently he contributed to the 2023 BTS Pleural Disease Guidelines and was co-lead for the 2021 BTS national pleural services organisational audit. Dr Stanton continues to be involved with regional and national initiatives in thoracic ultrasound training and has been an active recruiter to various multicentre trials in pleural disease and asthma.

Dr Stanton is a co-author on many of the key UK-led clinical trials in pleural disease from the last decade which have informed national recommendations in the management of malignant pleural disease, pneumothorax and pleural infection. He remains active in recruitment to clinical trials in pleural disease and asthma.
