About
Dr Andrew Margo is a highly experienced Consultant Psychiatrist with over 40 years of clinical practice across the NHS and private sector. He specialises in the assessment and treatment of a wide range of mental health conditions, including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, psychosis, personality difficulties, trauma‑related conditions and complex psychosocial issues.
Born and trained in South Africa, Dr Margo completed his medical degree at the University of Witwatersrand before moving to the UK, where he initially worked in medicine in Newcastle upon Tyne. He later trained in psychiatry in London, beginning in Older Adult Psychiatry with Professor Tom Arie before moving to the Maudsley Hospital, where he worked alongside several leading figures in the field, including Professor Michael Shepherd, Felix Post and Dr Henri Rey.
His training combined biological psychiatry, psychotherapy and social psychiatry, giving him a broad and balanced approach to understanding mental health. Over his long NHS career, he worked across multiple subspecialties including general adult psychiatry, liaison psychiatry, rehabilitation psychiatry and a mother‑and‑baby unit. He has now worked exclusively in private practice for the past eight years.
Dr Margo has a particular interest in the impact of culture, class and religion on mental health, shaped by many years working in the diverse communities of East London. He is known for his thoughtful, collaborative style and his ability to help patients make sense of both their inner and outer worlds.
