About

Dr John Silberbauer is a highly experienced Consultant Cardiologist and Cardiac Electrophysiologist specialising in the management of cardiac arrhythmias. He provides expert care at Nuffield Health Brighton, alongside his NHS roles at the Royal Sussex County and Princess Royal Hospitals. 

Dr Silberbauer completed his medical training at the University of Cambridge and University College London in 2000. He undertook dedicated cardiac electrophysiology fellowships at St Thomas’ and King's College Hospitals, and was awarded the prestigious European Heart Rhythm Association Fellowship in 2012 at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan—a world-leading centre for ventricular tachycardia ablation. He holds an MD(Res) higher degree from St George’s for his research into pacemakers and atrial fibrillation. 

Deeply committed to advancing patient outcomes, Dr Silberbauer leads the cardiac electrophysiology research program at the Sussex Cardiac Centre and serves as a PhD supervisor across Brighton and Sussex Medical School, the University of Sussex, and the University of Warwick. At Nuffield Health Brighton, he combines this world-class academic background with a compassionate, patient-centred approach to heart health.

Research

Dr John Silberbauer is a leading figure in clinical cardiac electrophysiology research, dedicated to translating academic insights into safer, more effective treatments for heart rhythm disorders. As the research lead at the Sussex Cardiac Centre, he has authored 65 peer-reviewed publications, many of which are highly cited and published in high-impact cardiology journals. He also serves on the Editorial Board of the highly respected US journal, Heart Rhythm. 

A frequent international congress presenter, Dr Silberbauer pioneered the global, safety-enhancing EpiCO2 technique for epicardial ablation. He serves on prominent medical technology advisory boards and has secured over £3m in NHS research funding within the last five years. As Chief Investigator for multiple international randomised controlled trials, he drives the highest level of medical evidence to shape future clinical guidelines. Furthermore, he has been instrumental in bringing pioneering technologies like pulsed field ablation to the Sussex Cardiac Centre ahead of other NHS sites through first-in-man studies. 

His dedication to medical education is reflected in his role supervising PhD candidates. By seamlessly bridging clinical research and frontline practice, Dr Silberbauer ensures his patients at Nuffield Health Brighton directly benefit from world-class, cutting-edge cardiac care.
