Mr Sarela has been a consultant surgeon since 2003. He graduated in Mumbai and trained in London, Leeds and New York. Mr Sarela is a Core Member of the Bariatric Surgery Multi-Disciplinary Team in Leeds and will empower you to make the best choice with any treatment.

Mr Abeezar Sarela is married to a couple-relationship counsellor and they have one daughter. Outside of medicine, Mr Sarela's main current ambition is to run a marathon!

Research

Mr Sarela has published over 50 papers in medical journals, and he has lectured extensively.

In weight loss surgery (bariatric surgery), Mr Sarela published the first UK study on risks from the gastric band, gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy. Mr Sarela published the first international paper on long-term outcomes from the sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve operation). He is a collaborator in the national, NIHR funded ByBand-Sleeve trial to compare the gastric band, gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy.

In acid reflux surgery, Mr Sarela has published on the effectiveness of fundoplication surgery for Barrett’s oesophagus. In gallstone surgery, Mr Sarela has published a randomized controlled trial that compared two different technologies to remove the gallbladder. In hernia surgery, Mr Sarela has published outcomes from laparoscopic surgery for incisional hernia. In surgery for cancer of the oesophagus and cancer of the stomach, Mr Sarela has published extensively on molecular genetics and prognosis. In gastroparesis, Mr Sarela published outcomes from gastric electrical stimulation (stomach pacemaker) for delayed emptying of the stomach.

In addition to surgery, Mr Sarela is engaged in PhD research on the ethics and law of informed consent for surgery.
