About

Stephen Langley is Professor and Clinical Director of Urology at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford.

He sees patients, men and women, with general urological problems such as 

  • Bothersome urinary symptoms
  • Blood in the urine
  • Kidney stones
  • Urinary infections
  • Raised PSA tests
  • Blood in the semen
  • Benign prostate conditions including BPH
  • Prostate cancer

He also regularly provides expert second opinions for men with prostate cancer referred from other consultants.

He is an acknowledged international expert in prostate cancer and prostate conditions.

He invented the technique of template prostate biopsy in 2003 for cancer detection, which minimises the risk of infection and maximises the detection rate. This technique is now considered the gold standard worldwide. This coupled with the latest MRI evaluation is the optimal way to assess men with possible prostate cancer.

He undertake both prostate brachytherapy and robotic radical prostatectomy for the treatment of prostate cancer. He has written a series of patient information booklets on urological conditions which can be downloaded from his website. He has also produced numerous recent academic peer reviewed papers reporting his research in prostate cancer and prostate diseases. His opinions are frequently sought and published in the national press.

Research

Prof Langley leads a thriving research team in Guildford which has developed an international reputation over the years. He has now successfully treated over 400 men with prostate brachytherapy and has presented their outcomes widely and published the results in peer reviewed journals.

He invented and developed the techniques of prostate template biopsy in 2003 and 4D Brachytherapy in 2012. Both techniques have been adopted widely and are used by consultants worldwide.

He has advised the Department of Health on prostate cancer matters and his opinions are frequently sought and published in the national press.
