About
Mr Syed Yusuf Iftikhar is a Consultant Surgeon and Honorary Associate Professor with a specialist interest in gastrointestinal, keyhole (laparoscopic) and cancer (oncological) surgery.
He qualified as a doctor in 1979 from Dow Medical College in Karachi. He completed his surgical training in the UK within the Mid‑Trent region. In 1985, he was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCS). He later gained a Doctor of Medicine (DM) degree from the University of Nottingham in 1991, one of the highest academic qualifications a university can award. He was the first Pakistani general surgeon to achieve this distinction.
Mr Iftikhar was appointed as a Consultant Surgeon at Derbyshire Royal Infirmary in 1994. During his career, he has taken on a number of senior leadership and teaching roles, including Director of Education, Programme Director for higher surgical training, and Council Member for the Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons.

He is also an Honorary Associate Professor and an Emeritus Professor at the University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
Charitable and Humanitarian Work
Mr Iftikhar has made a significant contribution to humanitarian and charity work both in the UK and internationally.
In 2005, he led a team of doctors from the East Midlands to provide medical aid following the South Asia earthquake. In 2006, he founded a charity, now known as Midland Doctors, which delivers healthcare support in the UK and overseas.
His work has included:
- Helping to build a hospital in Pakistan
- Providing medical care in underserved areas such as Sindh and Kashmir
- Teaching medical students in Punjab
- Supporting children with disabilities
- Helping to establish orphanages in Moldova
- Supporting efforts to develop an HIV clinic in Malawi
- Raising funds to support communities affected by natural disasters
In recognition of his contributions, he was honoured by Her Majesty The Queen at Buckingham Palace for his service to communities. He has also received Rotary International’s highest award, “Service Above Self.”A Consultant Surgeon and Associate Professor with a specialist interest in Gastrointestinal, Laparoscopic, and Oncological Surgery.

The DM is the highest degree awarded by a university, and he was the first Pakistani General Surgeon to attain this distinction.
He was appointed as a Consultant Surgeon at Derbyshire Royal Infirmary in 1994, where he went on to hold several senior leadership and educational roles, including:

- Programme Director, Mid‑Trent Higher Surgical Training Programme (2001–2006)

- President, Derby South Rotary Club (2006–2007)
Humanitarian and charitable work

In 2006, he founded a charitable organisation originally known as the Midland Doctors Association, which has since grown into Midland Doctors, delivering sustained healthcare and humanitarian support nationally and internationally.

These contributions were formally recognised when he was honoured by Her Majesty The Queen at Buckingham Palace, acknowledging notable contributions made by members of the Commonwealth diaspora to their communities.
