About

Dr Joel Newman is a Consultant Haematologist, specialising in the diagnosis and management of blood disorders. He trained at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals and completed specialist haematology training at King’s College Hospital.

He has extensive experience working across the South East of England and treats a wide range of conditions, including anaemia, blood cancers, clotting disorders and other haematological conditions.

Dr Newman is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists. Alongside his clinical work, he has contributed to several haematology textbook chapters and previously served as Deputy Editor for the Journal of Medical Case Reports, an international peer-reviewed journal.

He has held a number of senior leadership and advisory roles. These include Specialist Advisor to the Care Quality Commission, Chair of the Sussex Division of the British Medical Association, and key roles in training future haematologists through the London Deanery and the Royal College of Pathologists.

Dr Newman is currently a substantive Consultant Haematologist at East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, where he is Chief of Medicine and Clinical Lead for Pathology. He also serves as Clinical Lead for the Sussex Pathology Network.

He has a strong interest in education and publishing, and founded and edited Haem Trainee, a national magazine supporting haematology trainees across the UK.

Haematology, blood disorders, abnormal blood test results and treatment of blood cancers with chemotherapy.

Other interests

Areas of specialism for Dr Newman include the diagnosis and management of anaemia, and the investigation and care of patients with myeloproliferative disorders (including myelofibrosis), myelodysplastic syndromes, leukaemias, lymphoma and myeloma, as well as other blood disorders.

Dr Newman can arrange for blood transfusions and iron infusions where needed, and provides chemotherapy for those who have blood cancers.

Dr Newman is married with three children, and enjoys spending time with his family, listening to music, and information technology.
