Weight loss surgery
At Nuffield Health Hospitals we apply a holistic approach to weight loss surgery, offering a range of services tailored to you. The key to our success is our taking time to understand your problems, your motivation to lose weight and your long term goals after the weight loss surgery treatment.
Obesity is a time bomb. The World Health Organisation envisage that it will become a significant global problem, leading to premature death due to its association with serious chronic conditions. These include type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidaemia - major risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
What’s right for you?
The abiliti® system brings ease and increased accuracy to the weight loss process by using food detection and activity sensors to monitor your eating and exercise behaviour.
A food detection sensor is placed into the stomach which tracks what the patient eats and drinks, any exercise taken and counts calories burned. Using a simple wireless connection, the doctor and patient can view this consumption and exercise data, which helps both create a diet and exercise plan that leads to weight loss.
Gastric Banding is a highly effective weight loss surgical procedure that limits how much food you can eat. Also known as Lap Banding, the operation helps overweight people achieve substantial and long-term weight loss. You may be eligible for surgery if your BMI (body mass index) is over 40, or if it is over 35 and you have other medical conditions. You will be asked to follow a liver shrinking diet prior to surgery. Our Dietician will advise you.
Gastric Bypass is another weight loss surgery procedure whereby the stomach is stapled to form a small pouch, then most of the stomach and part of the intestines are bypassed by attaching a part of the intestine to the small stomach pouch. This means that you would not be able to eat as much food and would therefore absorb fewer calories and nutrients.
Sleeve Gastrectomy is a restrictive procedure. The stomach is stapled vertically from top to bottom leaving a sleeve shaped stomach (approximately a quarter of its original size). This results in less food consumption and ultimately weight loss. Your Nuffield Health surgeon will be the best person to guide you as to the most suitable procedure for you, as this needs to be based on individual assessment and lifestyle factors.
The EndoBarrier™ Gastrointestinal Liner is a breakthrough treatment designed to help patients regain metabolic control of Type 2 Diabetes and obesity.
The EndoBarrier™ is placed in the GI tract endoscopically (via the mouth) to create a barrier between food and the wall of the intestine and to delay the mixing of digestive enzymes with the food.
Physicians believe that preventing food from coming into contact with the intestinal wall and delaying digestion until farther down the intestine alters the activation of hormonal signals that originate in the intestine, thus mimicking the effects of a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedure without surgery.
