About
I am a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist. I specialise in treating heart conditions using minimally invasive procedures. These include angioplasty and stenting, which help to open blocked or narrowed arteries.
I have over 15 years of experience in providing advanced heart care. I have been a Consultant at Royal Derby Hospital since 2010. I am also the Research Lead for cardiology at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust.
I believe in careful assessment and accurate diagnosis. I also make sure you understand your condition. My aim is to reassure you and help you return to normal life.
I work in both the NHS and the private sector. I see private patients at Nuffield Health Derby Hospital.
I assess and treat a wide range of heart conditions, including:
- Chest pain (angina, caused by reduced blood flow to the heart)
- Heart attacks
- Heart failure (when the heart cannot pump effectively)
- Heart valve problems
- Palpitations and irregular heart rhythms
- Shortness of breath and blackouts
- High blood pressure that is difficult to control
I also have experience in preventing heart disease and managing complex heart conditions.
I have carried out:
- Over 5,000 coronary angiograms (tests that look at the heart’s blood vessels)
- More than 2,500 angioplasty procedures, including complex cases
I helped set up the emergency angioplasty service at Royal Derby Hospital, which treats patients quickly during a heart attack.
Training and experience
I qualified in medicine in 1995. I completed my specialist cardiology training in the UK, including at Glenfield Hospital in Leicester.
I was awarded a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from the University of Leicester. My research focused on treatments for heart artery disease. I later completed advanced training in interventional cardiology at Leeds General Infirmary.
Research and teaching
I am actively involved in clinical research. I have contributed to major cardiology studies. I have also written and edited medical textbooks. This includes work on managing complications during angioplasty.
I have developed my expertise through many years of training and experience. I believe there are no shortcuts when it comes to caring for heart conditions. These can be serious, so careful investigation and clear communication are essential.
I aim to provide safe and effective treatment. I use the least invasive methods where possible. My goal is to help you feel informed, reassured and confident throughout your care.
