Mr Gareth Chan is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in foot and ankle surgery, sports injuries, and complex trauma.
He treats a wide range of foot and ankle conditions, helping patients to relieve pain, improve mobility and return to their everyday activities as quickly as possible.
Mr Chan provides specialist assessment and treatment for a broad range of foot and ankle conditions, including:
- Bunions and forefoot deformities
- Ankle arthritis
- Ankle replacement surgery
- Ankle instability
- Achilles tendon injuries
- Tendon disorders
- Sports injuries
- Foot and ankle pain
- Lower limb fractures
- Soft tissue injuries
Mr Chan also has a particular interest in the management of foot, ankle and lower limb fractures, as well as soft tissue injuries. Patients can often be seen within 48 hours of injury, with rapid access to imaging, specialist advice and, where necessary, surgery. His aim is to provide prompt treatment, avoid unnecessary delays and support the fastest possible recovery.
Approach to patient care
He takes a holistic approach to patient care, focusing on relieving pain, restoring function and supporting recovery. Working closely with physiotherapists, orthotists and other healthcare professionals, he ensures patients receive personalised treatment and rehabilitation plans tailored to their needs.
Education
Mr Chan graduated from UCL Medical School in 2014 and was appointed to specialist orthopaedic training as the highest-scoring candidate in the country.
He has completed advanced fellowship training in foot and ankle surgery, sports-related ankle injuries, hindfoot reconstruction and complex trauma at leading centres in the UK and internationally, including the National University Hospital of Singapore, the Surrey Foot & Ankle Fellowship, and King's College Hospital, one of the UK's major trauma centres.

Research
Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Chan is actively involved in research, education and surgical training. He is an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Surrey and Training Programme Director for surgical training across Kent, Surrey and Sussex. He has authored more than 30 peer-reviewed publications, presented his work nationally and internationally, and is currently completing his PhD.
