About

Professor Amer was trained in Sheffield, and completed advanced training in General Gynaecology, Minimal Access (keyhole) Surgery and Reproductive Medicine before becoming a Consultant at the Royal Derby Hospital in 2006. In general gynaecology, he dealt with a wide range of conditions such as heavy and/or irregular periods, fibroids, ovarian cysts and genital prolapse.

Professor Amer also has a subspecialist interest in Reproductive Medicine including polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and management of infertility including Assisted Reproduction Treatment. In addition, he has an interest in the management of chronic pelvic pain and endometriosis, both medically and surgically. Professor Amer's interests in surgery include extensive laparoscopic surgery (eg, total laparoscopic hysterectomy), hysteroscopic surgery and tubal micro-surgery.  He also runs a weekly PCOS and menstrual disorder clinic at Royal Derby Hospital.

Keyhole surgery

Whenever surgery is indicated, Professor Amer strongly advocates the minimal access (keyhole) approach for most gynaecological procedures including total hysterectomy. This modern surgical approach, which requires special skills, offers several advantages over the traditional open surgery such as shorter hospital stay and a quick return to normal life activity. In addition, keyhole surgery leaves a tiny abdominal scar with a much-reduced risk of wound infection.
