Bilateral Hip Replacement

If you have significant damage and pain due to arthritis in both your hips, you may be a candidate for bilateral hip replacement.

During bilateral hip replacement your surgeon will replace both your hips with an artificial ball and socket joint (a prosthesis). The prosthesis can be made out of metal, ceramic or plastic.

Patients who can not tolerate a long procedure or anaesthetic may be advised to have two separate hip replacements. However if you do undergo bilateral hip replacement you will benefit from having one procedure and one recovery.

Although you will be able to bear weight on both your new hips very early following your surgery, you will need both physical and emotional support at home in the first few weeks of recovery.
