What is a cataract?

A cataract is an opaque, cloudy spot in the lens of your eye. As cataracts develop your vision can become blurry, making it difficult to see things clearly.

It's time to see a specialist when poor vision affects day-to-day activities such as driving, reading or activities you enjoy.

How is it treated?

Cataract surgery is the most common procedure carried out in the UK and is both highly safe and effective. It's usually done under local anaesthetic and completed within 20 minutes.

An ultrasonic probe is inserted through a tiny incision in the cornea (outer layer) of the eye. This breaks down the lens so it can be easily removed before a synthetic lens is inserted to replace it.

How long does it take to recover?

You can go home within a few hours of surgery but should have someone to drive you and help at home for the first 24 hours. While taking some precautions, you can get back to normal activities within 48 hours.

Your vision will improve over a few weeks with most patients fully recovered within a month or two.
