Recovery Plus from Nuffield Health at St Bartholomew’s Hospital

Being physically active both before and after surgery helps to obtain the best outcomes as well as minimising the risk of complications. Those who participate in post-operative rehabilitation may recover faster and therefore be able to return to their normal activities sooner. Our connected health and wellbeing approach allows us to support you with every aspect of your care and recovery, from hospital treatment to personal training and physiotherapy.

What is Recovery Plus?

Recovery Plus is a 12-week rehabilitation programme for patients that have undergone total hip and knee replacements. You will be engaged in Recovery Plus throughout your hospital journey, talking to your consultant and physiotherapist about whether this is a suitable option. After your course of outpatient physiotherapy post-surgery you can be referred into the Recovery Plus programme, if appropriate.

Our Recovery Plus rehabilitation programme offers 12 weeks of supervised exercise in the state-of-the-art facilities at the Barbican Fitness and Wellbeing Centre within our London City Campus. All of our Rehabilitation Specialists have specific training in total hip and knee replacement rehabilitation, so you'll be in safe hands. Your exercise programme will be bespoke, at the right level for you and designed to help you reach your goals. We will help you gain not just fitness but confidence in knowing how to keep active safely.

By helping you actively take control of your health and fitness, Recovery Plus aims to help you achieve a faster, more complete recovery. A successful recovery can help you to return to activities such as walking, driving, swimming, golf and gardening sooner, significantly improving your quality of life.

What happens during the Recovery Plus programme?

Our 12-week Recovery Plus rehabilitation programme includes:

  • Five one-to-one sessions with your dedicated Rehabilitation Specialist who will monitor your progress and provide you with a customised exercise programme according to your specific needs
  • A health check at sessions one and five
  • Complimentary access to our Nuffield Health Barbican Fitness and Wellbeing Centre for the duration of your programme with access to all facilities and classes
  • Use of the My Therapy app for guided exercise prescription.

How do I access the Recovery Plus programme?

Whilst in hospital you will be seen by an inpatient physiotherapist who will help you with your first steps towards recovery. You will start an exercise programme during your stay and be taught how to deal with everyday activities such as getting up from a chair, walking on crutches and climbing stairs. Once discharged from hospital you will continue to be seen by an outpatient physiotherapist who will work with you to set some personalised goals for your rehabilitation. Treatment will focus on restoring movement, reducing pain and swelling, and strengthening the surrounding muscles.

After you have finished physiotherapy, where clinically appropriate, you have the option to be referred by your physiotherapist into the Recovery Plus programme. The Recovery Plus programme consists of a further 12 weeks of rehabilitation in our Barbican Fitness and Wellbeing Centre.
