What is the Muscle and Nerve Centre?

This comprises a group of specialists headed by Dr Davies, Consultant Neurologist who coordinates the Neurology Outpatient Clinic with support from a specialist Neurophysiologist, Neuroradiologist and Neurophysiotherapist.

What is Neurology?

Neurology is the study of the central and peripheral nervous system. Disorders of the central nervous system (CNS) include headache, blackouts/seizures, dizziness, multiple sclerosis, stroke, movement disorders (such as Parkinson’s disease) and diseases of the spine and spinal cord.

This particular clinic also specialises in conditions that affect the peripheral nervous system (PNS). These include damage to the peripheral nerve (peripheral neuropathy) which may present with numbness, tingling and weakness; damage to muscle (myopathy/muscular dystrophy) resulting in cramps, muscle wasting and weakness and diseases of the neuromuscular junction (myasthenic syndromes) which cause weakness and fatiguability.

What to expect in the Neurology Outpatients appointment

At your appointment you will receive specialist clinical advice. Dr Davies will take a comprehensive medical/neurological history and perform a detailed neurological examination. Other tests that may be required include blood samples, CT or MRI scans and neurophysiological studies such as EMG/NCS (tests on the nerves and muscles) and EEG (electroencephalography).

How much will it cost?

  • Self funding patients - £250 for a consultation of half an hour
  • Medical insured patients will need to speak to their insurance provider
  • Investigations are charged separately
